District-specific notes

Mayurbhanj is a Scheduled Area district under the Fifth Schedule: the ST and SC Development Department lists Mayurbhanj among the districts fully covered. In Scheduled Areas, Regulation 2 of 1956 bars transfer of land by a Scheduled Tribe member to a non-tribal, so check the status of the land with the Tahasil before any purchase; see tribal land transfer rules and forest rights pattas.

Court work outside Baripada is spread across civil court complexes at Rairangpur, Karanjia and Udala (the sub-division headquarters of Bamanghaty, Panchpir and Kaptipada), with further Civil Judge (Jr. Divn.)-cum-JMFC courts at Betnoti, Morada, Thakurmunda, Jashipur and Rasgovindpur. The Keonjhar judgeship was separated from Mayurbhanj in 1982.

For land records, the Tahasil office handles mutation and record-of-rights matters; see mutation in Odisha and record of rights. Deeds are registered at the Sub-Registrar office with jurisdiction over the property; see sale and gift deed registration and encumbrance certificates. Free legal aid is available through the District Legal Services Authority, Mayurbhanj; see free legal aid in Odisha.
