The short answer
For CIBIL error correction, download your credit report, raise an online dispute with the credit bureau (TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax, Experian or CRIF High Mark) and write to the lender that reported the wrong data. Under RBI rules the error should be fixed within 30 days; after that you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay. If it is still not resolved, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
CIBIL error correction is a common problem: a loan you closed still shows as active, a loan you never took appears, overdue days are shown wrongly, or your name, date of birth or PAN is mixed up with someone else's. Errors matter because banks, NBFCs and even some employers and landlords check credit reports before deciding. This guide explains how the system works and the step-by-step dispute process, which is the same whether you live in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack or anywhere else in India.
Who keeps your credit report
Credit information companies (CICs), often called credit bureaus, are licensed by the Reserve Bank of India under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005. There are four: TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark. Banks, NBFCs, housing finance companies and other credit institutions report every borrower's account to them. "CIBIL score" is used loosely for all of them, but each bureau has its own report and score, and an error may appear in one and not the others.
A bureau does not create the data; it records what lenders send. So most errors can be fixed only when the lender confirms the correct information. That is why you dispute with both.
Common errors in a credit report
- A loan or credit card that was closed still shown as open, or with a balance.
- An account shown as "settled" or "written off" when you paid in full.
- Wrong days past due (DPD) or an overdue amount that was paid on time.
- A wrong loan in the report that belongs to someone else, or was taken by fraud in your name.
- Duplicate entries for the same account.
- Wrong personal details: name spelling, date of birth, address, PAN or phone number.
- Wrong ownership type, such as being shown as borrower instead of guarantor.
CIBIL error correction: step-by-step dispute
- Get your full report. Every CIC must give you one free full credit report a year. Download it from the bureau's official website (avoid third-party sites asking for unnecessary data) and check each account line by line. Get reports from all four bureaus if a lender has rejected you on the basis of one.
- Collect proof. No-dues certificate or loan closure letter, account statement, settlement letter, card closure confirmation, PAN and Aadhaar, and for fraud, the police complaint or FIR.
- Raise the dispute with the bureau. Each CIC has an online dispute form; for TransUnion CIBIL it is through the dispute resolution section of its website after logging in. Select the specific account or field, explain the error and upload proof. Note the dispute ID.
- Write to the lender at the same time. Email the lender's grievance or nodal officer with the report extract, your proof and the dispute ID, asking it to send corrected data to all four bureaus. Keep the complaint number.
- Track the 30-day timeline. RBI rules require a complaint about credit information to be resolved within 30 calendar days of when you first filed it: the lender has 21 days to send corrected data or explain its position, and the bureau 9 days to update. If the dispute is rejected, the bureau or lender should tell you why.
- Download the report again once you are told the correction is made, and check the other bureaus too.
Compensation of ₹100 a day for delay
Under the RBI's compensation framework (in force since 26 April 2024), if your complaint is not resolved within 30 days, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 for each calendar day of delay. The lender pays for its delay and the bureau for its own. The compensation is to be credited to your bank account without your having to ask separately, but mention it in your follow-up if it is not paid.
Credit score complaint to the RBI
Credit information companies, banks and larger NBFCs are covered by the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, in force from 1 July 2026. If the lender or bureau does not resolve your complaint within 30 days, or you are not satisfied with the reply:
- file online at cms.rbi.org.in, by email to crpc@rbi.org.in, or by post to the Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre, RBI, Chandigarh; the helpline is 14448;
- file within 90 days of the final reply or the end of the 30-day period;
- attach the dispute IDs, complaint emails, the report extract and your proof;
- filing is free, and the Ombudsman can award compensation, including up to ₹3 lakh for harassment and loss of time.

Wrong loan in credit report: possible identity fraud
If a loan or card you never applied for appears, treat it as possible identity fraud:
- Ask the lender in writing for the loan application, KYC documents and disbursal account, and state that you did not take the loan.
- Report the fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in, or at the police station, and keep the acknowledgment or FIR; see cyber crime complaints in Odisha.
- Dispute the account with every bureau, attaching the police complaint.
- Lock or change passwords, and check whether your PAN or Aadhaar has been misused elsewhere.
"Settled" is not "closed"
When you pay less than the full dues under a one-time settlement, the lender reports the account as "settled", which future lenders may view unfavourably. That is accurate reporting, not an error. If you later pay the waived balance, ask the lender for a no-dues letter and to report the account as "closed". If you are being pressured into a settlement through harassment, see loan recovery agent harassment.
When a court or consumer commission may help
Most errors are fixed through the dispute route and the Ombudsman. Where a lender's wrong reporting has caused real loss, such as a refused home loan, and the RBI route does not resolve it, a complaint before the District Consumer Commission for deficiency in service may be possible; see consumer complaints in Odisha. Information on related work is under consumer matters.
Frequently asked questions
How long does CIBIL take to correct an error?
Under RBI rules a credit information complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days of first filing it, with 21 days for the lender and 9 for the bureau. After 30 days, compensation of ₹100 per day of delay is payable.
How do I remove a wrong loan from my credit report?
Raise an online dispute with the bureau showing the loan and write to the lender with proof. If you never took the loan, report it as fraud on 1930 or to the police and attach that complaint.
Can I complain to RBI about a CIBIL dispute?
Yes. Credit information companies are covered by the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026. If your complaint is not resolved within 30 days, file at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days.
Is a CIBIL report free?
Each credit bureau must give you one free full credit report every year. Download it from the bureau's official website.
Can a settled account be changed to closed?
Only by paying the balance the lender waived in the settlement. Then ask for a no-dues letter and for the account to be reported as closed.
Who corrects the error, the bank or CIBIL?
Usually both. The bureau records what the lender reports, so the lender must confirm the correct data, and the bureau then updates your report.
